4 Alternative Fuel Sources In The Transportation Industry

Diesel and gasoline have historically served as the primary fuel sources in the transportation industry for the last century. However, several alternative fuel sources are also readily available today. In addition to diversifying fuel sources, these new and innovative sources are also helping to reduce the output of pollution from the transportation industry. This list includes and is not limited to ethanol, propane, biodiesel, and electricity. Consider this brief overview of alternative fuel sources and their individual impacts on the world, as well as their implications for the transportation industry.

Propane

Besides being used for heating and cooking purposes, propane is one of the most commonly relied upon alternative fuel sources in the world. This fuel source is a created as a by-product of petroleum refining and natural gas processing. Today, propane is commonly used in the bus industry. One of the most significant benefits of propane is that it leads to fewer emissions than gasoline; however, it can still be used in vehicles with gasoline engines. One major downside to ethanol is the way in which natural gas processing also generates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas.

Ethanol

Ethanol is produced from a variety of plant materials such as corn, wheat, and barley. According to the U.S Department of Energy, 97% of gasoline in the United States contains ethanol (most gasoline contains 10% ethanol). It is a renewable energy source and helps to improve overall emissions quality.

Electricity

Battery-powered electric vehicles have significantly grown in popularity in the past decade. One reason for their growing popularity is the way in which they recharge easily, as they can be plugged into an electric source to gain charge. This energy-efficient option is a preferable one, as it does not significantly contribute to pollution.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel source that is comprised of animal fats or vegetable oils. In the United States, biodiesels are frequently made from soybeans. This clean-burning alternative is mixed with diesel in the effort to cut back on the consumption of fossil fuels.
