Technicians are the backbones of fleet maintenance facilities. Without a team of trained and certified technicians, a facility won’t be able to keep up with all of the industry demands.Unfortunately, for many fleet maintenance facilities across the country, we have seen a shortage of technicians over the last few years. The TechForce Foundation recently came out with a report that predicts that the demand for new vehicle technicians from 2016 to 2026 is now three times greater than what it was previously projected from 2014 to 2024. There does not seem to be any clear solution to this problem; however, there are steps you can take to aid your technician recruiting efforts. Consider the following, and you should have more success at hiring technicians at your fleet maintenance facility.
Form A Recruiting Team
If you are serious about your technician recruiting efforts, you should think about assembling a team of recruiters to take control of your search. The duties of these individuals should be to form a list of qualified individuals from all over who may be interested in becoming a technician at your facility. Many fleet maintenance owners make the mistake of just relying on online job postings. It is critical that you are proactive in your search. Generally speaking, technicians are not going to come to you. You are going to need to go to them!
-What makes your company unique?
-What services/perks do you offer technicians?
-Why should technicians want to work at your facility?
These are the kind of questions you should be asking yourself when you are trying to recruit technicians to your facility. You need to find ways to sell your technician openings! For example, at SLEC we are proud to say that we offer comprehensive service tech training at our Baltimore headquarters. Our technicians also have access to over $500,000 of inventory, so they never have to wait on parts to complete a job.
