What to Think About When Purchasing a Two-Post Lift

What to Think About When Purchasing a Two-Post Lift

Consider the following before you buy a two-post lift.

When you open a repair shop, you’ll need to have the right tools at your disposal. These tools go beyond those you’ll find in a toolbox. One of the tools you’ll need practically every day is a two-post lift. These lifts can easily get trucks off of the ground so that you can work underneath them without any problems. That makes two-post lifts more handy than your everyday floor jack when servicing and making repairs. A lift will usually cost you between $1,500 and $3,000, but it is well worth the expense. But you shouldn’t make your purchase right away. Consider the following before you buy a two-post lift.

What Does Your Shop Need and What Can It Handle?

Different lifts have different weight capacities. To find the right lift for you, you should know what trucks you service. This will help you figure out what weight capacity your lift needs to have. Keep in mind that each two-post lift uses four swing arms. Each arm can manage 25% of the total weight. However, the weight isn’t always spread out evenly, which will influence how much weight your lift needs to handle.

As an example, semi trucks often have more weight in the front. The two front arms handle the most weight, so you have to use the front arms to determine what lift you’ll need. If the truck’s front is 12,000 pounds, each front arm needs to hold 6,000 pounds. Multiply that by four (because your lift will have four arms), and that means your lift has to handle 24,000 pounds, even if the entire truck may weigh less.

You get out what you put in when you purchase a two-post lift. So, while you could go for a cheaper one, it may not be the best solution long-term. If you pay the extra dollar upfront for a higher-quality lift, it will last you for a long time. This means you won’t have to worry as much about replacing your lift or worrying about problems popping up.

Warranties on lifts often range between one and twenty-five years. Now, your budget might not allow you to get a top-quality lift with an extended warranty, but it’s still an important factor to keep in mind.
